A wholesome and comforting dish made with rice, horse gram, and coconut — rich in protein and perfect for a quick lunch or light dinner.

Step by step method

  • Step 1

    Soak horse gram in water for 2 hours (skip if using sprouted horse gram).

  • Step 2

    In a pressure cooker, add washed rice, soaked horsegram, lightly crushed jeera and pepper, salt, and water.

  • Step 3

    Cook for 3 whistles, then reduce the flame and cook for another 10 minutes (or 4 additional whistles).

  • Step 4

    Once the steam releases, open the lid and add grated coconut.

  • Mix well and serve warm.

Tips & variations

  • Pairs perfectly with any thuvayal (chutney) like coconut thuvayal, toor dal thuvayal, or thoothuvalai thuvayal.

  • If excess water is there, just mix the content and keep it on low flame for few minutes to get it as per your required consistency.
