Recipe for a healthy breakfast/dinner using millet

Step by step method

  • To prepare the rava: Step 1

    Soak the millet for 2 hours. Drain the water and pat dry on a cloth.

  • Step 2

    Grind the toor dal, jeera and pepper coarsely in a mixie just once in the pulse mode. Add this with the millet and mix well. This can be stored in an airtight box even for a month.

  • To Prepare Upma: Step 1

    Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a frying pan/kadai. Once the oil is heated add the mustard seeds, then urad dal and the red chillies and sauté until urad dal becomes golden colour.

  • Step 2

    Now add asafoetida and curry leaves and sauté for 1 minute.

  • Step 3

    Add 3 cups of water to the kadai. Once the water comes to boiling point add the millet rava slowly mixing well so that no lumps are formed.

  • Step 4

    Keep the flame in minimum heat and cook it until the millet becomes soft and well cooked, stirring occasionally.

  • Step 5

    Add 2 tablespoons of oil and leave it in the minimum flame for 3 more minutes.

  • Tasty and healthy millet rava Upma is ready for serving.
