Step by step method

  • Step 1

    Clean and soak the millet for 30 to 40 minutes.

  • Step 2

    Heat the oil in a pressure cooker and once the oil is hot add the mustard seeds, urad dal, and chana dal and saute them.

  • Step 3

    Then add the pepper, cumin seeds, green chillies and onion one after the other in the same order. Saute them well until the onion turns transparent.

  • Step 4

    Now, add the groundnuts and curry leaves and mix well by stirring.

  • Step 5

    Add the soaked millet to this and saute for 2 to 3 minutes so that it mixes well with the masala.

  • Step 6

    Add water and salt and close the cooker with the lid. Let it cook for 2 to 3 whistles and put off the fire.

  • Step 7

    Finally, add ghee and transfer the upma to a serving bowl.

  • Whole grain kodo millet upma is ready for serving.

Tips & variations

  • Side dish: You can serve this upma with coconut chutney or tomato chutney or any pickle.
